Before requesting quotes: define the property and objective
Decide whether the main goal is lower grid imports, provision for an EV, resilience or another specific need. Collect bills and interval demand where available. Note seasonal occupancy and planned heating or charging changes.
Tell the designer about roof repairs, ownership constraints and access. Solar equipment may outlast the remaining condition of a roof covering; assess repair work before agreeing a layout. A visual impression of spare roof space is not a structural assessment.
Survey and design
The survey should establish orientation, shading, mounting approach, cable routes and the electrical supply. Ask the designer how protection, earthing, distribution-board changes and inverter location are determined.
Compare a clear equipment schedule and a forecast that separates generation from self-consumption and export. If storage is proposed, request the capacity, power and backup design independently. A larger array or battery is not automatically the most economical choice.
Permissions, contracts and work sequencing
Confirm the current local and regional requirements for the particular property and system. Building permissions, community consent, electrical documentation and grid arrangements are separate questions. Do not assume every installation follows the same administrative route.
Before paying a deposit, record the scope, legal contractor, exclusions, payment stages and conditions for equipment substitutions. Agree who obtains permissions and what happens if the survey or authority requires changes. Physical installation and administrative completion have different dependencies.
Installation and commissioning

At handover, request commissioning and test records, final equipment details, applicable certificates and operating instructions. Check that monitoring access is assigned to you and that the display distinguishes production, imports and exports. If backup is included, agree a documented test of the specified circuits by the installer.
Registration and export compensation
Ask for copies of the relevant submitted and completed documents and a named contact for any outstanding registration. The distributor manages network matters; the supplier bills the customer under the contract.
Check when export compensation actually starts appearing on bills and which price, limits and fees apply. Do not treat grid connection, a configured monitoring app and billing activation as the same milestone. Keep the final paperwork with the property records.
Aftercare and evaluating the result
Agree safe inspection and maintenance arrangements using the manufacturer's instructions. Do not climb onto the roof or work on electrical equipment based on a general online guide.
Assess a full seasonal cycle where possible. Compare forecast and measured generation while accounting for weather, downtime, occupancy and tariff changes.
