Marbella Villa Solar Planning: An Illustrative Example

How to evaluate solar and battery proposals for a villa with substantial daytime and evening electricity use.

Illustrative planning exercise, not a customer case study. No verified installation records, customer testimony or before-and-after bills are available for the previous story on this URL. Customer names, quotations, claimed measured results and long-term projections have been removed. The example below does not describe a completed LIT project.

    Start with the property's demand

For a hypothetical villa with a pool and air conditioning, collect twelve months of bills and interval meter readings. Separate seasonal occupancy, pool-pump hours and evening demand. A large annual bill alone does not establish the right solar or battery size.

Survey usable roof area, orientation, shade, access, structure and the electrical supply. Ask the designer to explain generation assumptions and any expected export or inverter limits. This page makes no claim about an actual Marbella property's roof or consumption.

Compare three options on the same assumptions

    OptionQuestion to resolve
Solar onlyHow much generation can the household use directly, and what export compensation is available?
Solar plus batteryDoes avoided evening import justify storage losses, installed cost and replacement risk?
Load scheduling firstCan pool pumping, water heating or EV charging move into daylight without adding storage?

    A transparent arithmetic example

Assume, solely to demonstrate the calculation, an installed cost of €12,000 and an annual bill reduction of €1,200. Simple payback would be €12,000 ÷ €1,200 = 10 years, before maintenance, financing, degradation or replacement. These are invented calculation inputs, not a price quote, expected saving or observed result.

Recalculate with a lower generation estimate, a lower import tariff and no grants. Keep fixed electricity charges in the post-installation bill. Do not multiply one favourable summer month's result across a year or extrapolate a guaranteed 25-year return.

Evidence needed for a real case study

    • Dated, consented installation records and exact equipment model numbers.
    • Comparable full-year bills, tariff changes, occupancy and meter data.
    • Itemised installed cost and evidence for any tax relief actually received.
    • Separate measured performance from forecasts and identify the author of each forecast.
